Unicorns win away at last years runaway league winners

With challenging availability issues across the club, the Unicorns visited Maidstone without a number of the key core adults, and no recognised keeper. Having made a crucial cameo earlier in the morning for the 2nd XI at Canterbury, up stepped Finley Simpson to volunteer to go in goal, with guest appearances from Unicorns coach Christopher "Chip" Bradley, and Unicorns Alumni Alex Spurgeon and Jesse Bradley.

As the game began, the Unicorns began to exert their technical dominance over the hosts, though the challenge of getting round the over-representation of adults in opposition teams remained. Nonetheless, opportunities were created before Edward Elliott, back to the goal, sweetly allowed the ball to deflect and dink over the stranded keeper into the goal, assisted by Wilfred Bradley. It was a finish which has all the hallmarks of a touch from Elliott Snr. A few minutes later, the lead for the visitors was doubled, as Andrew Simpson tapped the ball into the goal. From here, the home side's adults tried to exert their physical influence more onto the game, and the Unicorns were tested. Shortly before half-time, Maidstone were able to claw one back, from a Penalty Corner. In a development league, it was good to see no youth player in sight as the hosts lined up with 4 adults at the top of the D to smash one in. Fin did his best to block, but was just out of reach to protect a clean sheet.

Into the 2nd half, the game swung from end to end but the boys kept their cool and continued to press for another. Some harsh umpiring thwarted opportunities, and the lads spurning chances to punish a stretched back line. In the very last few moments, a dubious call for a penalty corner was made by the far end umpire, as the final whistle blew. Trailing by one goal, it would have been a tough on the boys to drop another win after a two-goal lead, but up stepped the defence, and Finley Simpson, who dived to block the strong strike before it was cleared away. And with that, a win was secured and the Unicorns now sit in 3rd place with 10 points.

Defender of the day was awarded to Tom Blackman, while Hugo May was awarded Attacker of the Day. Next week, the Unicorns visit King Hill Development.
