Unicorns @ Sutton Valence Development

Navtej Tung15 Sep - 21:03

Standstill traffic on the way to the pitch, one-way traffic on it

The Unicorns were kindly hosted by Sutton Valence for our only pre-season friendly of the summer. With challenging traffic conditions on the way to the game, the team were not able to prepare fully before push-back - but the lads were in good spirits. The changeable weather however threatened to be anything but good.

The boys were led by Henry, while Yuvan made his debut in goal, and Jasper making his first ever appearance for Gravesham & Wellcome - looking to follow in his dad's footsteps. The Unicorns started brightly, threatening with possession up top, but very quickly Sutton Valence were able to stamp their authority on the game. Four goals in the first twenty or so minutes made the game a challenge, with the team unable to really hold the ball. However after a change around in positions, the lads settled into the game and shored things up. At one stage, some effective play saw Edward play the ball across the goal for Jasper to place it into the goal - a dream start to life at the club - only for the umpire to rule that the ball had earlier crossed the backline. Sutton Valence were able to get one more goal prior to the break, but the boys remained positive during half-time.

Into the second-half, the game was much more even, though Sutton Valence were probably more threatening. While a development team, SV threatened the goal with some ferocious shots from their adults, one spectacularly saved by Yuvan. Later in the same SV were able to add another, but not before Edward tested their keeper, taking the ball down the left before smashing a reverse hit, giving the goalie a fright. To say Edward was disappointed is an understatement.

While the game finished with a scoreline that probably reflected Sutton Valence's dominance, the lads worked incredibly hard while they adopted to a new formation, and sets an exciting tone going into the season. Edward and Jasper worked well up top, stretching the field, while Henry shone with his leadership. Tom worked hard in the midfield, trying to make himself available at all times, while Manraj was like a tiger in the second half after a challenging first. Lastly a special mention for Yuvan for giving goal a go, and staying positive despite the score.

The attacking player of the game was awarded to Jasper, while defender of the day was awarded to Richard Parrott.

The Unicorns start their season this week with a trip to Knowle Park, who seem to be a last-minute addition to the league - 2.30 away at St Olave's School, Orpington.
