2-goal lead beaten at the final whistle with both teams chasing the win to secure promotion.

*Cruel timing denies promotion dream*

There are tough defeats — and then there are ones like this.

Gravesham & Wellcome 2s entered their final league game knowing exactly what was required: win, and keep the promotion dream alive. What followed was a performance full of control, intensity, and belief — but ultimately heartbreak, as Burnt Ash struck at the worst possible moments to take the result they needed.

---

### ⚔️ *Perfect Start*

From the first whistle, GW were on top — organised, aggressive, and dictating the tempo.

The opener came through pressure and persistence. John “Boothy” Booth forced a technical foul high up the pitch, winning a penalty corner. Sumeet Dhinsa stepped up and delivered, firing home for 1–0.

Then came the second — and it was pure intent.

Immediately from the restart, GW executed a half-court press to perfection. Captain Aaron Elliott read a loose pass, intercepted, and drove through 1-on-1 before calmly finishing.

2–0. Total control. Exactly what was needed.

---

### ⏱️ *A Blow on the Whistle*

Gravesham continued to look the stronger side throughout the half, but hockey has a way of punishing the smallest lapse.

With the clock effectively gone, Burnt Ash won a penalty corner — and converted right on the half-time whistle.

2–1.

A frustrating and ill-timed setback in an otherwise dominant opening period.

---

### ? *Game Turns, But Not Control*

The second half saw Burnt Ash push forward with urgency. They managed to turn the scoreline around, bringing it back to 2–2 and then edging ahead at 2–3.

Yet despite the scoreboard, Gravesham still looked the more composed and structured side — continuing to create, press, and believe.

---

### ? *Lucas Holds His Nerve*

With the game on the line, GW earned a penalty stroke.

Matty Lucas stepped up under immense pressure — and delivered.

A perfectly placed finish. 3–3.

Game level again, and momentum back in Gravesham’s hands.

---

### ? *The Cruellest Ending*

At 3–3, it felt like GW had done the hard part. They had absorbed the swing, regained control, and were pushing to finish the job.

But just like the first half, the timing would prove devastating.

With the final play of the match, Burnt Ash won another penalty corner — and converted with the last hit of the game.

3–4.

From control… to heartbreak.

---

### ? *The Bigger Picture*

Burnt Ash got what they needed — and secured promotion.

But this was a game where Gravesham & Wellcome 2s:

* Led 2–0
* Controlled large spells
* Executed their press and structure superbly
* Showed resilience to fight back

Ultimately undone not by being second best — but by two penalty corners at the exact wrong moments.

---

### ? *Final Word*

This wasn’t a performance that lacked quality.

It was one that deserved more.

Sometimes, the margins are brutally small — and this was one of those days.

But this group has shown what it’s capable of.

And if this season proves anything — it’s that they’re not far away at all.
