The weather was perfect for our game, though the environment was made challenging by some inconsistent calls from the officials. Despite this, the squad focused on playing their own game and battling through.

From pushback, GWHC looked eager, but a few early mishaps meant passes went astray and sticks clashed. GWHC found themselves 2-0 down early on, setting up a tough battle against the home side. Yet, the effort was immediate and undeniable—sweat, grit, and the faint smell of Deep Heat proved that nobody was holding back.

Then, out of nowhere, a familiar hero emerged. Joe “The Flare” McCann, back from the archives of GWHC legends, absolutely lit up the pitch with a short-corner special! After a slick routine (or at least slick until Chris Tomkinson forgot which end of the stick was the scoring end), Joe calmly cleaned up the mess — the anti-Ryan in full effect — and slotted home a vital goal to pull the score back to 1–2. The comeback was officially underway.

The intensity remained high, leading to a period of challenging game management. While two cards were issued to GW, the opposition also faced scrutiny, though they seemed to benefit from calls that often went their way. Our appeals for consistency were met with good humour, keeping the focus on the task at hand.

Danny “The Man” launched a few majestic aerials toward Kyle and Chris, sending the ball on a brief holiday to the stratosphere! The intent was bold and ambitious, pushing Ashford onto the back foot.

While ball distribution was a work in progress—enough to show we’re “getting there” but not quite brilliant yet—the effort to maintain attacking momentum was superb. The chemistry is building, not far from hitting that 100% mark!

Amidst the intensity stood Paul “Stylish Legend”, who simply oozed composure. He played the game like a man performing jazz while everyone else banged pots and pans. His control, timing, and calm under pressure were pure class — and this exceptional performance rightfully earned him Man of the Match.

Of course, no match is complete without a moment of intense commitment, and this week’s prestigious, self-sacrificing title (DOD) went to none other than Kyle Rowe, who redefined the term “professional foul.” Some might call it cynical, others might call it brave — Kyle called it “for the good of the team.” The umpire called it two minutes off, mate, but the spirit of the team was preserved!

Despite the final scoreline and the challenging card count, GWHC left Ashford with heads aloft. The heart was there, the effort was spectacular, and the post-match banter legendary.

With a bit more precision, a touch less self-inflicted chaos, and a continued focus on our game plan, next time will certainly be ours.
