The match started with some really decent early play, immediately forcing a short corner. Chris Tomkinson had the shot, and Jordan Laws was on hand to volley in the rebound, putting us 1-0 up. We kept up the pressure, with really good attacking play leading to Chris Tomkinson's first goal of the game, assisted by Zak R (or maybe Olly!). Max Shilling in the middle was really impressive, making the whole team feel unbeatable as we went into the break 2-0 up. Only one winner today, right?
The Cartwheel Calamity
Well, the second half started pretty good, but then came the comedy of errors. A break by the opposition down the right beat our Man of the Match, Ryan, and just outside the D (maybe), with the sun in our eyes, their forward miss-hit a bouncing shot. "Outside the D!" shouted the ever-strong centre back to the keeper. The keeper, finally listening to his defence, cartwheeled over the ball only to find the umpire signal for a goal, making it 2-1.
We knew we could do better. Really good play around the back made Marden seem lost. Soon after, Zak R passed the ball to Kyran, who showed off some amazing 3D skills in the D before lifting the ball over the keeper and into the roof of the goal, stunning the opposition with the amount of talent GWHC has going forward, and restoring the two-goal cushion at 3-1.
Paul's Marathon Run
The win was sealed in the later stages with a brilliant team goal. Paul... (let's just call him Paul for now ?) made a notable tackle in our 23 and then ran the full length of the pitch with two others. Three against the keeper! Paul then unselfishly passed to Chris Tomkinson, and though we've seen Chris miss these before, this one went in, making it a final 4-1!
It was a really good team performance. Special mention to Steve Lett, who has never played sweeper before but is like a duck to water! Great game by all.
