Winning Start for GW’s 3rd XI

First win for new captain DeBell
GW 3's started the season with a friendly match away against Holcombe 6’s.
GW started the match well, attacking the Holcombe D at every opportunity. Holcombe held firm until some great work in midfield allowed Danny Eyre to release the agile forward Shingi into the D with a lovely weighted pass, which he controlled, set himself and fired past the keeper into the left hand corner. 1-0.
GW’s continued to press hard and were rewarded again coming from a defence splitting pass by “The Holy Ghost” Jon White threading in the Goal Machine Andy “Simmo” Simpson, who fired the ball hard into the corner of the net, nearly taking the keeper with it. 2-0.
That ended the first half. GW attack firmly on top and the defensive trio of DeBell, Allen and May holding strong at the back.
GW started the second half as they finished the first. GW’s forward line pressured the Holcombe defence but they held firm at the back. GW’s finally got their reward at the 50 minute mark with a quick slick attack from GWs tireless midfield. 3’s debutant and man of the match Martin Lett Jr picking off a Holcombe attack with one of his numerous interceptions, working the ball forward to Graham Russell, who picked out Holy Ghost White running into the D at a blistering pace. Some slick stick skills from White taking it to the bye line, playing the ball across to the back post, laying it on a plate for centre forward Simpson to dispatch into a nearly open net with a theatrical dive shot. 3-0
With time ticking there was time for one last GW attack. Jon White with a Hollywood aerial ball from midfield like a quarter back finding his wide receiver deep in the end zone, picked out the on rushing Simpson. Simpson attempting to unleash a once in a life time baseball shot without the ball landing, missed badly, buried the follow up into the corner, but it would not count. The umpire adjudging the baseball shot miss to be dangerous to the fully padded keeper.
The game ending at 3-0.
A good start for GW 3's looking strong for the rest of the season.
