You can't win them all

GWHC2s approached this match with a strategic focus on strengthening the midfield, notably positioning Amit Ubhi in a more advanced role to create opportunities closer to the opponent's goal. Prior to the game, the team discussed the challenge posed by Maidstone, emphasizing the importance of maintaining urgency to prevent the skilled Maidstone players from dispossessing them.

The game began with good spirits, but it quickly revealed the anticipated patterns of play, with several GWHC players losing possession to Maidstone's capable players. This loss of possession happened on multiple occasions, culminating in Maidstone's first goal, as their forward skilfully lifted the ball over the goalkeeper.

Maidstone proved to be formidable opponents in the midfield, and GWHC's decision to strengthen their core at the start appeared to be the right call, even though they were at times hanging on, conceding several short corners. However, the defenders managed to thwart most of the threats during these set-piece plays.

Despite the pressure from Maidstone, GWHC remained a threat, particularly with young talents Oli Atkinson and Owen Walton combining effectively on the right wing. A few opportunities narrowly missed the target, with one leading to a short corner that Alex Spurgeon nearly drag-flicked into the left side of the net, narrowly missing but hitting a player on its way. Another short corner was initially awarded after deliberation by both umpires but later rescinded following an intervention by the Maidstone captain.

At halftime, GWHC found themselves trailing 2-0, with the realization that they had work to do. Reflecting on the first half, it was evident that the team needed to coordinate their attacking and defensive efforts more effectively, closing the gaps that had opened up between these units.

The second half brought a different dynamic to the game. Maidstone seemed uncertain with their two-goal lead, while GWHC controlled the attacking play. A breakthrough came when Si Bradley set up John Booth, whose shot from the top of the D deflected and looped over the goalkeeper into the net, making it 2-1 and anyone's game.

Moments later, Amit Ubhi had a close call, striking the post with a well-placed effort, leaving the Captain frustrated; calling unmarked and unable to reach the rebound. GWHC earned a couple of short corners, with one effort deflected towards the goal by Elliott, but the pass lacked the necessary pace, beating the goalkeeper but allowing a defender to clear the ball just before it crossed the line.

As the game intensified, contentious decisions were made, including allowing the Maidstone Captain to remain on the field despite repeated warnings for aggressive play, including one incident that resulted in a head injury for young player Reuben Morphew.

As time ran out, Walton attempted to make a game-changing play along the edge of the D, but the clock worked against them, and the game concluded with a final score of 2-1.

The team can now look ahead to a rematch with Maidstone in the second half of the season, optimistic that their growing skills and teamwork may lead to a reversal of fortunes.
